VITICULTURE IN THE CONTEXT OF CLIMATE CHANGE: THE ROLE OF SCIENTIFIC FORECASTING AND PRACTICAL ADVICE FOR FARMERS

Add to favourites

🍇In 2025, Ukrainian viticulture once again faced challenges related to spring frosts. The situation has clearly outlined the need for accurate forecasting and reasonable planning of vineyard locations in Ukraine. This is where the Tairov Institute of Viticulture and Winemaking plays an invaluable role, acting as a scientific shield for southern Ukraine, in particular Odesa region, against climate risks.

📑Daily monitoring of the condition of the plantations conducted by the Institute's specialists allows not only to assess the extent of damage, but also to give scientifically sound recommendations for crop preservation. Thus, according to Andrii Shtirbu, Head of the Viticulture Department, Candidate of Biological Sciences, the frosts were the least intense in the southern regions, which once again confirms the importance of locating industrial vineyards in optimal agro-climatic zones.

🌸 We would like to take this opportunity to sincerely congratulate Irina Kovaleva, Director of the Tairov Institute of Viticulture and Winemaking, on her recent birthday. We wish you inexhaustible energy, scientific victories and generous harvests in the business to which you have dedicated your life!

📢 Analysis of the situation in 2025:

📍 In the southern parts of Odesa region, where industrial vineyards are located, the frosts were short and mild, so the plants mostly did not suffer serious damage.

📍 Outside of this zone, especially in the northern regions of Ukraine, a significant part of the vineyards has been affected. Most of them are small farms, often without monitoring and frost preparation systems.

📍 Typical consequences are damage to the tops of the shoots, which can still allow for a harvest thanks to stepson buds.

📍 In the case of a more severe damage - when green shoots die, but the lower parts remain - there is a chance of partial recovery of inflorescences and secondary crop formation.

📍 With the complete death of young shoots, a complete loss of yield is likely, but the bush can resume vegetation due to replacement buds.

📜 Recommendations for farmers:

✅ Location of vineyards: Choose areas with a minimal risk of frost - the south of Odesa region remains the most reliable area for industrial viticulture.

✅ Monitoring and forecasting: Collaborate with scientific institutions, such as the Tairov Institute, that provide up-to-the-minute analytics on weather conditions and plantation health.

✅ Agricultural activities:

✔️Регулярне plant nutrition, especially during periods of stress.
✔️Застосування anti-stress drugs based on amino acids or biostimulants.
✔️Обрізка of damaged shoots to stimulate the growth of retained buds.

✅ New plantings should be planted with varieties that have greater frost resistance or rapid recovery from stepson buds.

✅ Increasing insurance coverage: In the face of growing climate risks, vineyard insurance should be considered as a mandatory part of the business model.

🔱Ukrainian viticulture has potential - but only when science, farmers and the state work in unison. Tairov Institute scientists remain an indispensable partner for the wine sector, proving that even in difficult climatic conditions, grapes can bear fruit with the right approach.
