On 17 March, an event took place that could become a new chapter in the history of the Ukrainian agricultural sector. A unique online meeting between representatives of the University of California, the Institute for Climate-Smart Agriculture and the NGO "Agrarians of Odesa" brought together those who are looking for not just solutions, but real breakthroughs for the future of Ukrainian agriculture.
The discussion focused not only on sharing experience but also on creating real mechanisms for implementing innovations. The meeting participants discussed the signing of a Memorandum that lays the groundwork for cooperation in the following areas:
✅ Implementation of climate-resilient technologies in agriculture;
✅ Optimisation of water resources, including through innovative irrigation methods;
✅ Using satellite monitoring data and artificial intelligence to manage yields;
✅ Joint research and educational programmes for Ukrainian farmers;
✅ Development of educational programmes and internships.
The meeting was opened by Atef Swelam, Director of the University of California Advanced Network Research Centre (UCANR). In his speech, he emphasised that the implementation of this project was made possible by Alla Stoyanova's continuous work and her visit to California, where the Ukrainian delegation had the opportunity to present our country's potential for international cooperation. "Thanks to her tireless work, international connections and desire to bring Ukrainian agriculture to a new level, what seems impossible is becoming a reality. Now the advanced technologies, experience and best practices of one of the most developed agricultural regions in the world can become part of Ukraine's reconstruction," said Atef Swelam.
"Science and education are the foundations of change," said Atef Swelam, adding that one of the important steps is exchanges between teachers and students of agricultural universities, the creation of joint curricula and online courses with the participation of California experts, as well as internships for Ukrainian farmers in California to learn best farming practices. Atef Swelam was also not indifferent to Ukrainian grain: "I admire your grain - it is truly the best in the world. I am confident that with our knowledge and your natural resources we can achieve incredible results."
Raisa Vozhegova, Director of the Institute of Climate-Smart Agriculture, emphasised the importance of this partnership for the development of the Ukrainian agricultural sector: "We are ready to join the implementation of effective projects, because we have a strong scientific base - 15 branches, including 12 scientific ones, 3 research stations in different regions of southern Ukraine, as well as 7 research farms. We have 140 employees, 90 of whom are scientists. We believe that cooperation with agricultural enterprises will help us achieve significant results. One of the best examples of a successful combination of business and science in Ukraine is the Stoyanov A.A. farm located in picturesque Bessarabia. Thanks to the efforts of Alla Stoyanova, this farm has become a model. Her work and management skills inspire other farmers, proving that there is a future in the Ukrainian agricultural sector," said Raisa Vozhegova.
Alla Stoyanovain turn, shared her proposals for the creation of demonstration farms for the implementation of climate-oriented technologies. "We are ready to establish experimental farms in Odesa region together, where the best practices of California will be implemented. This includes minimising the impact of climate change on yields, using organic and renewable resources, and the latest methods of soil conservation and fertility improvement. Our farm is ready to become a base for joint projects, as we see great potential in cooperation with international partners," she said.
Climate change is making water a strategic resource, especially for the agricultural regions of southern Ukraine. Therefore, an important part of the discussion was the issue of access to modern water management technologies. "We propose to conduct joint research to optimise water use in conditions of water scarcity, introduce Californian irrigation methods and organise training programmes for Ukrainian farmers on effective water management. Today's meeting is just the beginning. But it is already clear that when ideas become actions, borders disappear, and together we are building a future in which Ukrainian agriculture not only revives, but also becomes an example of sustainability and innovation for the whole world," said Alla Stoyanova, adding that sharing experience with California colleagues will significantly increase the efficiency of agricultural production.
All participants expressed their enthusiasm and gratitude for the cooperation. Everyone involved understands that this memorandum will be an important step towards strengthening the Ukrainian agricultural sector and implementing innovative solutions in agriculture.
The world is changing. The climate challenges are getting tougher. This meeting is not just an exchange of ideas. It is a moment when two worlds - the Ukrainian steppe and California science - find common ground to build a new era of agricultural development together. The memorandum opens up new prospects for Ukrainian farmers, creating favourable conditions for the use of international best practices in a context that meets modern challenges.
