RABBIT BREEDING IN UKRAINE: STABILITY IN NUMBERS AND OPPORTUNITIES FOR GROWTH

Add to favourites

🔎 As of 1 January 2025, there are 3.88 million rabbits in Ukraine, which is only 0.3% less than last year. Such dynamics demonstrates the relative stability of the industry in the face of war, inflation and logistical challenges. However, these figures hide an interesting structural transformation: the population is reducing the number of rabbits, while the industrial sector is increasing production.

🔍 Main trends in the Ukrainian rabbit breeding market

📉 Households, which traditionally hold the lion's share of livestock, have experienced a decrease of 1.3%, and as of the beginning of 2025, have 3.73 million heads. This is a natural response to economic difficulties, rising feed costs and reduced solvency.

📈 Instead, industrial rabbit breeding is growing rapidly: +30.6% compared to 2023. Today, 144.8 thousand rabbits are kept in this sector, of which 7.8 thousand are kept on farms. This is a positive signal for the agricultural business - there is a growing interest in a professional approach to rabbit breeding.

🌍 Odesa region is in the top three in terms of the number of rabbits

Particular attention should be paid to Odesa region, which ranks third in Ukraine in terms of the number of rabbits - 347.2 thousand. This figure demonstrates the region's strong potential for the development of specialised rabbit breeding. Proximity to ports, availability of agricultural land and an active farming community create conditions for exporting products and forming cooperatives.

🚀 Prospects for the development of the industry in Odesa region

  1. Export niche. There is a steady demand for dietary rabbit meat in the EU and the Middle East. With the establishment of certified farms, Odesa region can become the No. 1 exporter.
  2. Farmers' co-operation. Clustering together reduces the cost of feed, vetting and marketing.
  3. Deep processing. The production of rabbit sausages, pates and canned meat has a high added value.
  4. Support for government programmes. In 2025 grants can be expected to appear and compensation for small meat producers, including rabbit farming.

⚠️ Key challenges

✔️Висока feed cost.
✔️Недостатня veterinary facilities and access to specialists.
✔️Відсутність of the chilled supply chain for rabbit meat.
✔️Низький level of rabbit meat consumption in Ukraine.

✅ Recommendations for farmers in Odesa region

🐇 Choose meat breeds (for example, New Zealand or California) - they are better suited for industrial farming.
🏗Invest in small modular rabbit houses with an optimised ventilation and bedding system.
📦 Collaborate with restaurants, health food stores and online markets to establish stable sales.
📚 Learn the latest housing and feeding technologies to increase productivity and reduce costs.
💼 Look for participation in grant and regional livestock support programmes.

✨ Rabbit breeding in Ukraine is an industry with a solid foundation and strong growth potential, especially in active regions such as Odesa. Despite the challenges, the growth of the industrial sector and the interest of farmers indicate that rabbit breeding can become a promising niche for small and medium-sized agribusinesses.

🛤 It is only important to choose the right direction, unite, learn and move forward - because great opportunities are hidden in small forms of management. And rabbit breeding is just one of these forms.
